Indie 103.1 is dead to the airwaves...

I have to address this sad day in radio and independent music. The only other local radio station to spin independent music and now they've call it quits.

Orange County music don't you dare fret as I am here for all of you. I will promote and publicize your awesome music until my heart grows weary -- which isn't possible as I LOVE Orange County music. This is still the YEAR of Orange County music. Indie 103.1 may be gone.. but KUCI is here, the wonderful musicians are still here, and there are a lot of other outlets out there and many to come. I've got your backs. I'm working hard to get your music heard and I won't every give up on you.

Love you all longtime.

Expect tomorrow or Saturday my playlist from today's show, a video of the bands on the show and a link to where you can download the interview.

Playlist for 12-27-08

Happy holiday weekend!

On this week's show I played a few new bands to Press Pass Music. They included Moostache, Andrew Heringer Band, Hollowell, Will Crum, Marc B and Walk The Rio. Just by looking at these bands and hearing the sounds they produce, you can tell how diverse Orange County music really is. I love it!!!!!

What are you doing for New Year's? Well, whatever it is, hopefully you'll spend it with good friends, good booze and good spirits. It's what you make it. You have to know you're going to have a great time. It doesn't matter how much you spend on a hotel or club party, ex. Party hopping in Santa Barbara last year and getting locked out of a friends and crashing at some random but very nice people's house. ; ) The best New Year's ever! Again my New Year's Resolution for 2009 is to bring Orange County the biggest New Year's party with five to eight local bands for 2010 and to go to more shows!

Have a wonderful time you guys! OH and next week's show is my pick for the best songs of 2008.... also, I will be surveying locals on their favs too. If you have a favorite song from a local musician... send me an email: ashleyeliot@yahoo.com and I will dedicate that song to you.

Keep supporting local independent music!

Local Holiday show and Dolphin City's new album -- The Playlist

Hey music lovers,

How's everyone doing? I finally woke up at 4 p.m. today, since I pulled an alnighter before my show and passed out right after. I thought since in the article in OC Weekly I said I never go out on Friday nights I would try it out for once. I just finished school and it's the holidays. What the heck! My coworker and I sailed through the boat parade in Newport and then hit a holiday party at a friend's house (I knew I wasn't sleeping before my show once I walked through the door). It was worth it though. I met a few musicians so expect more new music on next week's show.

Now, I am catching up on work and hoping to hit the Dolphin City CD release party at eVocal tonight.

On today's show, I played Dolphin City's new album "Discretion" on the first-half of the show and then the second-half it was the LOCAL HOLIDAY show featuring holiday tunes from local musicians.

Thanks for everyone's support. It's been a great ride. I hope to continue bringing you Orange County independent music and keeping you updated on what's going on in our music scene.

Have a VERY NICE holiday weekend. Merry Chrismuhanukwanzukah!!!

Press Pass Music -- 12-13-08 playlist and more

Hey kids,

I hope you're all having a wonderful weekend. As for me, I'm at the station doing some more volunteer hours and then I need to study for two finals. But don't worry Monday I will be free at last. Expect me to hit a bunch of shows this week.

As for what I played on this week's show, we heard some sounds from new bands never before played on Press Pass Music. Some of the bands were Melanoid, Czar Rose, TableFruit and Oliver Jane.... speaking of Oliver Jane... here's an email from Oliver about the song "Hot Misery" and "Passeporte." It's an inside scoop on what the songs are really about. This band is fairly new but is getting a pretty big following. Check out their myspace (www.myspace.com/oliverjane)

Here's what he said:
"Hot Misery" -- "Because tea is a HUGE part of the irish life style, we took to drinking it many times a day. 'Hot Misery' was inspired when Oliver spilled a cup of hot tea and and Jane's uncle got very cross with him. The original version had slurping noises in the song and everything."
From the lyrics: "I'm sorry that i made a mess, i promise that i'll clean it up someday."

"Passeporte" -- "This is a story about a woman who travels to Paris on a business trip. On her travels, she meets a young french man and they end up having a one night stand. she tries to tell him that it could never work out and leaves for the airport. he follows her yelling things in french at her but she can not understand what he says because she does not speak his language. she is convinced he is in love with her (she is kinda arrogant) and tries to tell him it will never work out. in reality the french man does not love her and is only trying to tell her she has forgoten her passport."

My playlist is below. But before that, there are some shows to check out tonight and later this week, AND A LOT OF THEM ARE FREE SHOWS!!

Enjoy the weekend.... go to a holiday party or go to a whole bunch... and please please see a local music show. Support...listen... and remember that what's in your own backyard is pretty GREAT.

OC Weekly interview with Luke Allen -- the new visionary of the 2009 OC Music Awards

I've actually been helping book bands for the OC Music Awards showcase, which will take place from January to March. The actual awards will be in early April. As for the lineup... sorry, you've got to be patient... but it's looking pretty good right now. Luke Allen, owner of Gemini Studios ( where I want to live!!), is now in charge of the OC Music Awards. I am looking forward to the new and improved event. With Luke in charge, it's going to be as Borat would say "great success!" I'm thrilled to be part of the awards and cannot wait for the showcase.

Check out the interview by OC Weekly's Chris Zieger (such a nice guy btw.. and funny too).

As for what's happening on Press Pass Music this Saturday, you can expect a lot of new bands and a volatile mix of major rump shaking. ; ) haha.

AND on Saturday, Dec. 22 is my Local Holiday show. If you want to submit tunes, email me at ashleyeliot@yahoo.com.

ALSO, I just reapplied for my show next semester and I hope to get a timeslot with more fexibility for bringing in musicians to share their thoughts and play their music. Wish me luck and cross your fingers, eyes, toes....

Have a beautiful weekend. Monday is my last final... then we party.

Press Pass Music -- playlist for 12-6-08

Yo kids. Here's the playlist... I'm exhausted. I did something stupid and went out last night thinking I would be fine for the show. ummmm... I got three hours of sleep and now I have to go help out with a nonprofit event. Then back to studying for finals and writing like five papers. Yes, I'm busy...yes, I graduate next semester... I better be! ; )

Anyways... the show was fun this morning. There was another DJ in the studio doing some volunteer hours so we freaked each other out thinking there was someone else in the studio. Good times.

On this week's show I played The Henry Clay People's new album "For Cheap or For Free." It's a pretty great album. This band is definitely going places. Again, Eric (drums) and Joey (guitar and lead vocals) have roots in Orange County. Joey grew up in Yorba Linda and Eric lives in Tustin ( go Tustin, that's where I live!). Also, Noah and Andy graduated from UCI. Very nice!

Also, I played some music by new bands I discovered.. like The Steelwells, Chaser, Bigger Than Bridges ( a fairly new band who is looking for a guitarist) and The Trade.

I know I sounded like a frog this morning... get over it. ; ) Thanks for listening!

What to expect this Saturday, Dec. 6

Well hello there,

This week's show I'm playing some new music and some new bands I just discovered. Also, I will be playing the The Henry Clay People's new album throughout my show. Yes, the band may say there based in Glendale or Culver City but this band has roots in Orange County. Eric who plays drums in the band currenlty lives in Tustin and Joey, lead singer and guitarist, grew up in Yorba Linda. YES they were influenced by Orange County... and yes they have influenced Orange County. I hope that makes a little sense. Anyways... it should be an interesting show.

I've been keeping really busy lately. I'm helping book bands for the OC Music Awards, applying for a couple shows on KUCI for next quarter, getting ready for school to end ( two more weeks = five finals and five papers), holiday work parties are every week through Dec. and I'm trying to help launch binarysounds.com. Yes, it's alot... and HECK YES I love it. I'm excited for what is to come and you all need to get ready because OC is becoming an even more beautiful place. Thank you local musicians for being so friggin talented. Keep it up and keep producing great music.

Next week's show will be the HOLIDAY show!!! If you haven't sent me your holiday songs then shoot me an email: ashleyeliot@yahoo.com.

Live it up...see a local show... and if you need a friend to go then pshhhhhhh give me a ring. ; )

Thanks again for tuning in to Press Pass Music!

Playlist for show 11-29-08

Hey there,

Happy Thanksgiving weekend! Well, I went to a few shows this week and celebrated the four-day weekend with a little bar hopping. Monday I saw The Sweet Sweet Things and Francisco The Man at Detroit Bar. I talked to CJ, guitarist for The Sweet Sweet Things, and bumped into Luke Allen of Gemini Studios. Then I discovered the band Walk In Medical, who is featured in this month's OC Weekly as is our KUCI music director Sam (his name's on the cover -- Heck yes!). Check it or don't. It's free. Also, OC Weekly has releasec a free local music compilation -- download it at: http://blogs.ocweekly.com/heardmentality/oc-weekly-local-music-compilat-2/

On Tuesday, I went to my favorite pub The Auld Dubliner in Tustin and sang "Seven Drunken Nights" with the Humble Hooligans, who I played on the show. On Wednesday, a few friends and I started the Thanksgiving celebration around 2 p.m. and ended at Del Taco at 2:30 a.m. It was a busy week. : )

Playlist for 11-22-08 -- Hong Kong Six's new ablum and the surf report.

Well, another show bites the dust and here's the recap of what happend: I played Hong Kong Six's new album "Once Upon A Time In The West," throughout the show, and tried to adhere to my surfer listeners needs by throwing in some Japanese Motors and a surf report. It was a fun show. I usually record my show but the stupid computers in the studio were all messed up and ended up not recording it. urggggg!

BTW I'm looking for local surf music so if you know of any please email me: ashleyeliot@yahoo.com.

Next week, I don't have classes... so lets party. Hopefully I will be going to bunch of shows this week, maybe I will see you at Detroit Bar or La Cave. ; )

The Halloween after party at Press Pass Music - Show #5 - 11-01-08

Happy Halloween Weekend!!!!!!!!

So here's what happened:
I was up at 7:30 a.m. Friday and stayed awake until 8:30 a.m. Saturday. It was my first alnighter while I have been a DJ... and oh it was a good time. Dressed as my alter ego aka Wonderwoman, 5 ladies and I party hopped in Newport then to Huntington.....ending the night at a friend's house at 3 a.m. playing Rockband and singing Pat Benetar. I went to the show still as Wonderwoman.... I played Halloweenish tunes by local musicians and passed out when I got home.

Then last night, my friend Nina and I continued the celebration by going to a lame club opening in Newport Beach but we walked right in and walked right out.... and rushed over to Durty Nelly's for some karaoke! We rocked out to Pat Benetar's "Heartbreaker ( yes, I have been obsessed with this song all weekend.... but you know I would have sang Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" if someone hadn't sang it already). Here are pics from last night... since I have a feeling the third member of our trio who assisted with our routine will be checking out my blog, well if he knows what's good for him. :P Oh and we also met McLovin!! ; )

Hopefully all of you guys had a memorable Halloween!

THIS IS WHAT GETS ME EXCITED.... the future musicians of OC

I just received a press release on this great event tomorrow night called Code Pink's Beat Breast Cancer Boot Camp at Kaleidoscope Courtyards Shopping Center in Mission Viejo. There is a band of 8 boys ranging from ages 10 to 13 who will be performing. Their name is Ugly Paint -- http://www.uglypaint.net/index.html.

This is what gets me excited... little boys of course... kidding. It's the future of not just Orange County music but music in general. These kids have already played the Coach House, the Laguna Niguel concerts in the park, street fairs and so on. Yes, all I've heard is a few cover songs of U2's "Vertigo" and The Raconteurs' "Steady As She Goes," but it's their initiative to pursue music and even use music to make the world a better place.

Last week, I sent out emails and posted bulletins about looking for a band/musician for the Friends of Lake Forest Animals benefit on Nov. 8. Who doesn't love animals? Who wouldn't want to use their music to better the community and world? I know, if I could really play the guitar, drums or sing ( I may own two guitars, a drum pad and mic, but we all know as much as I would like to be a musician, I'm meant to be the one who promotes good music rather than produce it) then I would use my music to help people, animals and this crazy mixed-up world. My response to finding a musician to play for pro bono has been minimal. I love how "management" decides where you play and how much you should charge... I love how it's a get out of jail free card.... I love that there are bands and musicians who are talented but use the talents to further their own selfish needs rather than for the good of our neighbors....

I just love that I may be promoting music that may be produced by shallowness.

My rant is over.... check out the Ugly Paint. Go to codepinkbootcamp.com for more information on the event.

Press Pass Music is officially on the air!

Hey Orange County music lovers,

The Press Pass Music show airs on KUCI 88.9 FM this Saturday, Oct. 4, from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. I know it's super early but I just became DJ and I have to pay my dues. I'm so happy to have this opportunity to feature local independent music.

Press Pass Music will focus on Orange County musicians, the actual music biz and what the heck is going on in our community. We have so much talent here and they deserve recognition. The Press Pass blog is dedicated to music news, interviews and upcoming shows.

I'm way nervous for Saturday because I really don't want to mess up and break something. Gosh, technology. Otherwise, I'm stoked. Check out the show and if you miss it because you passed out early ( lame!) or you're too drunk to turn on the radio, then no worries I will be uploading the shows onto itunes.

Let me know your thoughts on our local music scene and if you're a musician, send me your music!

You can email at ashleyeliot@yahoo.com or add me on the myspace: myspace.com/presspassmusic

Me love you long time,
