The Lawrence Arms
"Apathy and Exhaustion"
by: Sean Boy

"We're like the two sides of the same coin," says vocalist and guitarist Chris of the band The Lawrence Arms. He speaks of himself and the bass player Brendan who take turns at vocal duties on their new album Apathy and Exhaustion. Chris does the sensitive punk shtick: mid-tempo tracks, snappy lyrics about love lost and found. Jawbreaker to a tee. Brendan's the brash punk. Piss drunk, pissed, and all gritty-witty. Complete with smoked-out, faux British accent. The two trade off equally until about two thirds into the album and then it leans heavily to Brendan's favor. So over all it's like Tim Armstrong singing for Jawbreaker. Either way you like it, Chris or Brendan, Blake or Tim, Apathy and Exhaustion is a great sounding record and with Jets To Brazil settling into a mellower phase, The Lawrence Arms gives the next generation of punks a chance to experience the good old days of the mid-nineties.
