Hats off to Jade Tree who consistently challenge the clichéd notions of punk rock. Miighty Flashlight explores the folksier side of the punk rock. This sound is nothing new to Mike Fellows, former bassist for DC's influential Rites of Spring, who's played with the likes of Royal Trux, Smog, Papa M, and Will Oldam. Fellows mixes up the acoustic guitar nicely with powerbook built beats and various other noises and percussions. The album feels somewhat under done due to the fact that many of the songs are instrumentals and feel incomplete without vocals. Fellows won't knock your socks off with his lyrics, but they are quirky enough to hold your interest, but not overly goofy. You're not going to find yourself singing along to any of these songs, but this album makes a great soundtrack to lazy afternoons.
