People Under The Stairs
"O.S.T."
by: Jizzy Jazz

After two previous jazz infused, head banging albums, People Under the Stairs once again come correct with their third, and controversially tightest album. As usual, resident producer/MC Thes One, once again refrains from the keys of his synth, opting to craft tracks by uncovering dusty breaks, and soul and jazz samples mixed in with some tricky turntabilsm; proving true to his once infamous promise, "We'll keep making that '93-style hip hop with '73 funk 'till 2033." Songs like "Tales of Kidd Drunkadelic" provide the dance music, with ultra funky jazz samples and lyrical tales of becoming inebriated, "...easy on the ice, and a little more Smirnoff, so once I reach the bottom, I can be clear of..." Further, despite their laboratory methods for producing tracks, what separates these rappers from the rest of the pack, is their lyrical style. Thes One, and Double K, avoid the battle raps for the most part, and instead surface intricate stories with their rhymes. "The L.A. Story" for example, portrays an everlasting love for their hometown despite the spurious people and gang banging thugs. On the flip side, tracks like "Empty Bottles of Water," will leave you thirsty for more of the raw, multi-syllabic flow. Conclusively, though they remain "under the stairs", and are heavily labeled as an underground duo, a future with some commercial recognition is verging on the horizon. This is a definite neck breaker for any hip hop or jazz head with open ears.
