Atlanta-based beat intelligence agent, Scott Herren, AKA Prefuse 73 drops this genius EP to whet the appetite of blip and tweet fans everywhere. The opener "Desks.Pencils.Bottles" is the title of the opening track, but could just as well be a partial instrument listing to this playful joint. The track opens with an almost improvised percussive burst of pencils on bottles like Herren got bored waiting for his noodles at a Chinese restaurant and started chopsticking away on everyone's water glasses. The pencils and bottles drop out for most of the song, but then bridge their way back into the track and then close it out. The schtick never wears thin. The remaining three tracks are solid, forward flowing, beat-based efforts without all the cut-and-paste moves that prevailed on the Prefuse 73 debut. The stuttering vocals made for a great sound signature on Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives, but could get sophomoric on the next full length.
