After years of remixes and EP's Jazzanova has finally released an LP. This eclectic six man squad named their title with precise musical relativity. This LP truly is "in between" Nu Jazz, and basically every other genre. From trip hop to fusion, to afro funk, to drum-'n'-bass, Jazzanova will take you on a seventeen track, sixty minute journey through the different color combinations of music. The first thing that caught my attention is the way they ingeniously transition into songs. Many records these days have choppy transitions, especially eclectic producers. Many times you will hear a mellow track which then is preceded by a track using exaggerated drums. Jazzanova does this, although, "in between" different genre influenced songs, they insert interludes so to speak. Similar to paragraphs in an essay, transitions are needed and keep the flow and groove of everything running smoothly, which vastly compliments the intricate blends in their music. On the track "The One-Tet," Jazzanova cleverly fades a recurring jazzy piano loop with an interesting up and coming emcee, Capital A. Their hip hop blend doesn't stop here, on the track "Keep Falling," two Philadelphians go back and forth, a poetical songstress and a hungry emcee. A standout track, "Soon," with vocals courtesy of Vikter Duplaix is a space infused, club ready song. The drum patterns are quite erratic and are pleasantly complimented by the far out space sounds. "No Use," is a relaxing four minutes with Clara Hill singing over warm synth-sounding pianos and guitars, with a mellow drum pattern. Usually known for their remixing, Jazzanova successfully creates an album with a laid back feel. The drum patterns remain intricate and all the vocals are smoothly mixed in creating an album full of balance. No one vocal harmony overtakes a background fusion of instruments and vice versa.
