The Ray Makers
"Phantom Third Channel"
by: Sean Boy

Phantom Third Channel is the beefed-up EP from L.A. Group The Ray Makers. Four solid tracks make up the recording: "Moonflower" a spacey, lounge groove amped with uptempo rhythms; "Follow Me" a slower, blippy song laced with hypnotic, post-punk vocals; "What Would You Like to Play?" a more straight ahead lounge vibe with vocoder vocals used to repeat the song's title; and the light and airy "GroupeGrope" employing various bells for the song's melody, then about three quarters the way through it segues into the most joyful melody of the summer, Mum-like, but with a bit more substance. A few key A&R moves bring more substance to the EP itself, aligning a couple of the tracks ("What Would You Like to Play? And "Moonflower" specifically) with the likes of Ursula 1000 and The Baldwin Brothers for remixes. An intriguing first effort to say the least.
