"Tangent 2002: Disco Nouveau"
by: Sun-J

Compiled by the Ann Arbor, Michigan label Ghostly International, 'Tangent 2002: Disco Noveau' defines robot disco. Complete with ultra funky '80's sounds, keyboard melodies, video game sound effects, and techno-pop sensibility, it truly does salute the Italian '70's Disco Sound. The creative influence of pioneering Eurodisco producer Giorgio Moroder brings abstract sounds fused with the interpolation of such producers such as Susuma Yokota which can be audibly witnessed on the respective track, “Re: Disco.,” a remake of the Donna Summer classic “I Feel Love.” Though, undoubtedly, the standout track has to be “My Radio,” by the Toronto based Solvent. A melancholic letter to the FM airwaves of the past, you can actually feel the bass line intertwine through a lush collection of warm synth-based sounds. Other appearances by artists such as the DMX Krew, only keeps the vibe of the album at a higher intoxication level of robotic dance grooves. The only drawback, if any on this album, would be the similar sounding bass lines, and heart pumping rhythms, as even Hong Kong Counterfeit is guilty to this on their “Metal Disco Rmx.” Though, in another light, this provides for easy transitions between tracks, and keeps the genre and feel of the album at a certain level. All in all, this is a great find for anyone looking to keep a party moving. Also, with its twenty-eight page foldout booklet, it makes for great on-the-toilet reading material!
