The Get Up Kids
"On A Wire"
by: Sun-J

Lightly strummed acoustic guitars, twinkling pianos, and lush harmonies does not mark the return of the EMO infused Get up Kids. "On A Wire" marks the transition into the world of catchy chorus', underage female fans, and the star driven hope of someday being on TRL. Though, this is not necessarily for the worse. Grabbing production help from famed REM producer Scott Lit allows for front man Matt Pryor's vocals to run free across pop-grunge guitar riffs. Their first release of new material in three years, these Missouri boys show why patience truly is virtue. Though nothing even comes close to reminding listeners about "Something to Write Home About," tracks like "Stay Gone," with upbeat-back-porch-twang provide enough flavorful vocals and splendidly-sporadic drum measures to keep listeners in tune. "Let The Reigns Go Loose" stereotypes a typical pop ballad with phrases such as "misfits under mistletoe," though it is the requisite organ line bobbing in between intricate guitar interplay which calls for praise. On the opening track, "Overdue," the band rolls floating melodies over carefully sung lyrics about love and relationships which morph into fluttering drums and winds of acoustic guitar. "Grunge Pig" shows the bands ability to extract rock 'n' roll from dirty guitar loops. And as if to follow the progression of their sounds, it seems the "Kids" have saved the "best for last." Ending with "Hannah Hold On," The Get Up Kids seem to once and for all end all peculation of their genre. Pop punk dominates past barriers of equilibrium on this sold album. A great pick up for any punk fan.
