A superb blend of emo, hardcore, and pop, Taking Back Sunday brings a complete compilation of songs to the table as they flirt with an interesting mix of southern Californian post-punk, nu-metal and old school hardcore. And in this mix of sounds from different bands such as the Movielife, Thrice, Thursday, Hot Water Music, and Saves the Day, Taking Back Sunday distinguishes themselves from the pack with their magnificent use of dual vocals on tracks. This is fully displayed on the third track, “Cute Without the E,” but it was “Ghost Man on Third” with the melody of the woman singing in the background that really amazed me. Taking Back Sunday is unique in that they can go from raspy sounding pumped up yelling lyrics, to heartfelt emo cadences, not to mention their ability to create catchy hooks such as that on “Timberwolves at New Jersey.” The piano loop in the beginning of “The Blue Channel” adds an interesting twist, and is startlingly enchanting, especially since it's followed by some throat clenching vocals. On “Great Romances of the 20th Century,” lyrics such as, “A beautiful girl can make you dizzy, like you've been drinking jack and coke all morning, she can make you feel high, full of the single most commodity known to man,” shows the band's ability to capture happiness and sadness at the same time. A must have CD for any punk fanatic.
