The latest release from Stone Throw records, this is an assemblage of the 7" collector's series. All twenty two tracks are previously released 7" jawns. Hybridized together on one hell of a compilation, this armada of grooves, beats, funked-out instrumentals, and crafty lyricism all combine and fuse to demonstrate a sampler's haven. Standout tracks include the xylophone loop laced "Microphone Mathematics" remix by Quasimoto, who brings his high pitched vocals, and merges them with an exhilarating guitar riff. The funk-soul love song "Things Could Be Better," by Ernie & the top Notes is the stand out track among the contemporary cuts. Captain Funkaho's, "My 2600" takes cartridges and joysticks to a whole new dimension. The caricature effort takes Brian Bennet's classic "The Investigator" and combines retro, indie-pop female vocals to form a sexadelic mix of Barry White and vintage CaptainF unkaho. "Devotion '92" displays true the hip hop essence courtesy of the Peanut Butter Wolf, Charizma tag team. Madlib join intergalactic warfare with Medaphoar, and Oh No on "The Ox," and Yesterday New Quintet brings some feel good jazz to the table on "I am Singing." If you haven't yet collected all the 7", this is a great find, complete with enough sampling, cutting, and emceeing to keep you warm during hibernation this year when hip hop typically runs bare (bear).
