The Donnas
Spend the Night
by: Sun-J

Their 1998 debut Teenage Rock & Roll was classic fem-punk. The three successive releases were great listens, yet fell off in quality each time. Though, four years from their debut, The Donnas return with another potential monster, Spend the Night. This album clearly is their best work from not only a musical standpoint, but a lyrical one as well. Guitarist Donna R. displays the fundamentals of her punk-rock-ravaging riffs. Bassist Donna F. has also seemed to step her game up as well. Drummer Donna C. once again brings the body moving rock-rhythms, and vocalist Donna A’s voice shows maturity and growth along with versatility. The complete CD is non-stop fun. There are no cuts that seem to stray too far away from the vision of the album. “Dirty Denim” is a song with fresh ideals. It’s about a pathetic trend, and the chazzy punk-rock guys that live it. Smart and sassy, The Donnas prove they are not the type to turn their backs on sexual innuendos. “Take me to the Backseat,” and “Please Don’t Tease,” are lecherous provoking songs with a hint of sarcasm complete with intelligent, ironic lyrics such as “You shouldn’t look so good, if you don’t want to be misunderstood.” “I Don’t Care (So There)” brings in a funky piano loop into the mix. “Take it Off,” and “Who Invited You” are AC/DC like with 1980 style riffs galore. Making huge strides from the days of their Ramones influenced tracks, The Donnas have brought back the Judas Priest, Kiss and Motley Crue sound with a feminine twist to things which are perfect for new school flavor.
