The Apples in Stereo
Velocity of Sound
by: Sun-J

If I were to describe this CD in three words: short and sweet. Though, I am a reviewer, and it is my job to elaborate on my thoughts. So let me proceed…short and very sweet. Sugary almost. Make no mistake, their contribution the Powder Puff Girls LP was no fluke; it’s their sound. The Apples in Stereo return with a poppy collection of upbeat, guitar-lickin’ good songs. The first question that popped into my mind though after a thorough listen of the CD was, what the hell have you guys been doing? Velocity of Sound is a twelve track (counting the bonus track) joy ride. Literally, this album is perfectly appropriate for a joy ride, or even a trip to the supermarket for that matter. Only twenty-nine minutes in length, this Colorado Quintet will have you tapping your feet and humming their riffs. Not to mention the fact that throughout the day, remnants of their extremely catchy lyrics will sporadically pop into your head, and eventually filter out through the mouth vocally. The album starts off with an amped-out pleading song about trying to “accomplish the impossible.” What’s interesting though, is the next song, “Rainfall” is sung by drummer Hilarie (one of the two tracks she has lead vocals on), rather than lead singer Schneider. The standout track has to be the Beach Boys cover, “She’s Telling Lies,” (a bonus track in “North America”) which in fact is a bonus track The group also attempts to play the psychedelic card with cloud-nine songs such as “Where We Meet,” but the bubblegum ness is still as evident as ever. “Mystery,” is a beautiful pop ballad complete with a lush lick, and an almost orchestration of vocal background harmonies. In conclusion, although the lyrics are catchy, and the riffs are imprinting, I would assume The Apples in Stereo would benefit from some further premeditated writing as well as a little more depth ness into the album. After all, as it stands, this is a great album for those craving an upbeat way to spend thirty minutes.
