It's been a few years since we've heard much from Roni Size. Sure there have been some good singles, but it's been farily quiet from the man who many consider the king of dirty, jazzy drum and bass. Well, he's back in force with a load of new tracks in "Touching Down." For the many who look to the Full Cycle Crew to lay down nice and dirty beats and bass, take my word that you will not be disappointed here. His style hasn't changed much, though several of the tracks toward the first stay on the quieter, jazzy side of things. Tracks in the middle like "Find Myself" are a nice combination of the quieter jazz heavy tracks surrounded by b-boy funkiness. There are a few of the trademark anthems in the mix, but nothing quite topping his previous material for which he is best known. Taken individually, many of the songs are solid and good to listen to, but the mixing on the cd seems to be almost an afterthought to the tracks themselves. It's nothing like the mix sliding out of time; it's more a problem with regard to how the songs relate to each other. The track order seems schizophrenic at times, making the mood of the cd uneven. There are also many places where he chooses to mix melody lines together, and unfortunately, it fails to work more often than not. All in all, however, the quality tracks make it a solid CD, and my solution to the mixing is to just put it in the CD player with a few others on random play.
