File under Electronic Polka Death Country. This is the genre under which Mochipet himself apparently wants to be considered. (...not to mention many others). Most people would be quick to classify "Rambient Works 2002" under IDM, but I think it's probably a step partially away from that. However, that's not important, what's important is the groove of the tracks, right? Well, it's insane. In a good way. In fact, the more insane the patterns and samples get, the better the tracks are, as a rule of thumb. The more sane tracks tend to remind me of Aphex Twin and Squarepusher. These are of course not bad memories, but it takes more than copying some other artist to make a good cd. However, there are many tracks where Mochipet shines, like Polka Electronic Death Country. The track is all over the shop in deconstructing sounds from those genres and weaving them together in new and interesting ways, and yet, they manage to flow and stay together well. The Adventures of Flaminco Boy also pleases as a spanish gituar sample battles to not be consumed by an wacked-out IDM drum line. Arguably the best track on the album is "The Dessert Search for Techno Baklava". The cluttered IDM breaks are brilliant rampaging over a middle eastern tune that everyone's probably heard some time in their lives. All in all, this CD is a wonderful mashup of studies in deconstruction and recombination, showing that Mochipet is helping take this kind of music in several steps forward in interesting, fun directions.
