The Sadies
Stories Often Told
by: Sun-J

The Sadies consist of brothers Dallas and Travis Good whom both sing and play guitar, drummer Mike Belitsky, and bassist Sean Dean. Stories Often Told marks their fifth album in four years, and has to be one of their best. This Canadian country band is not all about alternative-country rock. They combine elements from psychedelia, cosmic country, and laid back surf guitar. This latest record was produced by the famed Greg Keelor of "Blue Rodeo." Though I am not especially a country fan, the instrumentals on this CD are absolutely provocative. "Lay Down Your Arms," is a western guitar lick filled song full of anticipation. "A#1" is a detour into 60's thanks psychadelia. "Within A Stone" is an off key instrumental with wacky horns which surprisingly provide for an interesting song. Ex-Wilco pedal-steel player Bob Egan provides some extra crank to "Such A Little Word." The Sadies' cover of the DQE song "Tiger Tiger," has a strong 60's garage feel to it. "Of Our Land," seems to be more psychadelia oriented instrumentation, and the LP is wrapped up with the jazzy "Monkey & Cork." This album is not only for the avid country listener. Complete with psychadelic 60's rock and fun lyrics, The Sadies' still manage to kick the western licks and keep the toe tappin' and two steppin' going.
