Ping Pong
Safety Scissors and Kit Clayton
by: Zero Sharp

Newest in the series of sports themed releases from Carpark Records, Safety Scissors and Kit Clayton's new release "Ping Pong" musically emulates an actual game of ping pong exceedingly well. Well, if those people were on crack and played changing their styles every point or two. In what turns out to be an incredible schitzophrenic ride, we are treated to 36 interlocking tracks in about 18 minutes made mostly from sounds sampled from an actual game of ping pong (with a few other organic sounds thrown in most likely.) Each of the tracks seems to follow from the previous logically and musically, which is saying quite a bit given that the album progresses through noise to glitch pop to swing to samba to electronica jazz. Most of the melodies and styles, however, are very short lived, the longest staying for a little over two minutes. 0-1 (all the tracks are named after scores in the ping pong game in question) is a nice trip into swing where the beats are synopated with ping pong ball bounces. 1-3 is interesting, falling somewhere between hard techno and IDM just due to its sheer business. Other notable tracks include melodies created from minimal tones and spitting sounds, and a samba that sounds like it was made from 8 bit video game music. There are also some nice jazzy tracks and another exellent glitch breakbeat near the middle of the album. Those also in for the straight up electronica will also not be disappointed. This is a very good album, and worth its price in the ADD medication that you will surely need after too many listens. Go ahead, much like ping pong, it's fast, furious, and just plain fun.
