Groove Armada
Love Box
by: Sun-J

Tim Findlay and Andy Cato have come along way since their days as Brixton DJs. Back with their fourth album, Groove Armada brings an amalgation of genres and fuses them into an eleven track spectacle representing the true essence of eclectic album creating. As usual, Groove Armada brings on a ship load of guest singers and emcees, but the real surprise is the help they get from 1970 folk singer Richie Havens on the emotionally scintillating “Hands of Time.” Love Box kicks off with the chugging guitar riff based song, “Purple Haze,” and then transitions into the scandalous “Groove is On.” Neneh Cherry’s vocals are hypersexual and ooze in and out of the bluesy, drum filtered measures. Cherry also whips out an inspirational performance, with her profound gospel abilities on “Think Twice.” “Remember” is an upbeat cut using the sample “Autopsy” by the 60’s folk act, Farpert Convention. “Madder” finds singer Saffron belting out a mesmerizing chorus, yet she is overpowered by the gritty, quick delivered lines courtesy of MC M.A.D. “Final Shakedown” seems to be the only true techno track, although “But I Feel Good” does have a techno wave developing behind gutsy ska influenced reggae rock. “Easy” and “Lovebox” are the formulaeic sounds we’ve been hearing from Brixton’s finest these passed years. “Easy” is especially the standout because Sunshine Anderson brings high energy to an eratic disco flavored banger. Furthermore, despite jumping around from genre to genre, Love Box packs flavor and creativity. Another well conjured album from the boys across the pond.
