Even if they may be many losing members, the slightly less Massive Attack has come back with a new studio album. 100th Window, which was done entirely by Robert Del Naja aka 3D, suffers from a case of just not being as exellent as their previous offerings. Let me start by saying that the mastering work on this CD is brilliant. The balance between the drum, bass, and the rest of the sound is incredibly sublime experience. Other than that, I don't know that the CD has that much to offer. It's very there, and I found no point in the album when I found myself thinking anything was bad. The other thing that caught me about 100th Window was the fact that I missed it when it was gone. It seems to be strangely addictive in its uniformity. In a reversal of usually bringing new female vocalists into the limelight, Massive Attack teams up with Sinead O'Connor for three of the songs. Her singing is as usual very beautiful, but her lyrics still verge on cinamatic drama which doesn't ever quite become as haunted as the tricks in question deserve. One by one or all together, the songs just don't match up with the stuff off the old albums. It's by no means a bad album, but at the same time, it only demands attention after given a few listens followed by silence. It is nice enough to chill by, but if that's what you're looking for, I would suggest that you turn your attention to something that has other features besides slightly pleasant audial space consumption.
