The Sea & Cake
One Bedroom
by: Sun-J

Returning with their sixth album in their ten year span as a Chicago quartet, The Sea & The Cake seem to have perfected their type of indie-rock; lazy spring morning music. Consisting of Sam Prekop's distinct, relaxing vocals, Archor Prewitt's guitar riffs, Eric Clardige's heart thumping bass guitar and the genius production of drummer John McEntire, One Bedroom, the truly display the reason they've survived the notoriously lack luster promotion and exposure of independent college radio. The album starts out with a post-rock sounding song "Four Corners," which has Prekop's voice drifiting in and out weaving through simple bass lines and soft drums. "Four Corners" smoothly, and almost unnoticeably transitions into "Left Side Clouded," which turns into a fast paced lyrically complex (that is, lyrically complex as compared to their previous work) song touching upon what seems to be their career as a band. "We reject the timing, it's not so bad, just misplaced." "Hotel Tell" has keyboard and drum beat elements which reflects a jazzy click clacking sound with lyrics about landscapes, slow motions and life in general. "Shoulder Length" is a disco-funk sounding, mid tempo played keyboard and lazy guitar fusion of music with Prekop's vocals distinct and warming. "Interiors" has the makings of a hit instrumental if not for Prekop's vocals floating through the track. What makes "Interiors" stand out is how it starts off laid back, before culminating in an orgasmic explosion of musical elements. "Try Nothing" is a less frantic, breezy and mellow piano chiming melody. The Sea & Cake's David Bowie cover, "Sound & Vision" reflects the true versatility of the band. Ten years and still ticking, The Sea & Cake are far from falling off. I suggest giving this album the obligatory "How's your father."
