In what might be one of the best introductions of who Aphex Twin is, Warp Records is releasing a two CD set called "26 mixes for Cash." This CD represents work spanning a period of about twelve years, and the genres represented are best described as all-inclusive. Everything from Philip Glass to Nine Inch Nails, Jesus Jones to Wagon Christ, it's pretty much all here. Many of these remixes have seen release in some shape or form, many have been hard to find at best, and it would be quite the accomplishment to have already owned them all. One example I was happy to see get this kind of release was the big drum remix of Gavin Bryars' "Raising the Titanic." A few were also previously unreleased to this album, including a new remix of Windowlicker and SAW2 CD1 TRK2. Since the album is this diverse, it's more of an experience of listening of an evolution of sound styles than any kind of uniform mood throughout the CD. What's to say, really? These tracks were excellent the first time I heard them, and I still like them when I listen to them now. Trying to pick tracks off of this compilation that stand out more than the rest is perhaps a silly task, many are good and deserve mention. If you've never really owned any Aphex Twin, as I wrote before, this is a good introduction to his work. If you do already have a lot of the stuff here, there's still some rare and diverse stuff here that'll probably make you at least give this album a few looks. Either way, this is just plain brilliant music.
