Everything but the Girl
"like the deserts miss the rain"
by: Zero Sharp

Somewhere between a B-sides album and a remix album stands Everything but the Girl's new release "like the deserts miss the rain." I'll start by saying that this is one of the oddest compilations I've ever heard because to me, this sounds like a studio album. All of the songs go together, and the whole album flows better than any reach back through time and put a whole bunch of songs together album I've ever heard. This is even more noteworthy considering the varying styles of songs that EBTG has produced. Everything's accounted for here; the acoustic chill-out, the drum and bass, and the techno among others. Many people will probably complain of the fact that many of the old favorites aren't here, and some of the songs that did make it are relatively unknown, but I like the choices. Protection, Tracey Thorn's collaboration with Massive Attack, is here, and I think it fits much better here than on a Massive Attack album. Photek, the god of d'n'b breaks, lends his remix of Single to here, and it's almost beyond words. The remix is from about '96, and it's completely that golden style of "intelligent" minimal breaks. Their work with Spring Heel Jack, Walking Wounded, is also here, as good as it always was. Chicane's remix of Before Today is also an interesting twist on the d'n'b style of that day (1996ish). My Head is My Only House Unless It Rains is a great choice to start the album, in its acoustic chilled out style. This CD is completely solid from start to finish. My advice: if you're thinking of buying any kind of chill out various artists compilation, I recommend forgetting that idea, and checking out this CD instead.
