Prefuse 73
One Word Extinguisher
by: Zero Sharp

Ah, the joys of breaking up with a signifigant other. There's a sublime ability for many to focus during and after a breakup, and I've heard many claim that they do their best creative work when they do. This might be partially true, but at the same time, trying to work that overwhelming storm of emotions into the album generally makes for a painful listening process for all involved. Prefuse 73's new album "One Word Extinguisher" is a good attempt at avoiding that, but it does fall into those traps. Prefuse 73 has his roots in hip-hop, and that comes through well here, working the idm groove over a solid base in hip-hop. Make no mistake, this is not hip-hop, this is something a few steps evolved from that. My favorite track on this CD, Choking You, is a nice exercise in restraint and has a groovy drone thing going on. The last track, "Styles That Fade Away With a Collonade Reprise" is also nice, and untouched by the angst that permiates a good piece of the other tracks. Overall, the less overt the influence of the break-up, the better the tracks are. Many of the instumental tracks, while possibly holding more symbolically in them, can just be enjoyed on a superficial level. Well anyway, it's a good CD, but I just hope that he's either completely single or in a relationship the next time he decides to start up again.
