Nicola Conte
"Bossa Per Due"
by: Sean Boy

Nicola Conte brings his retro jazz aesthetic to life on his debut album "Bossa Per Due". Classically trained, Conte is a record producer, DJ, A&R man for Italy's Schema Records and has taken the next step in recording his own album. Not satisfied with drum loops and samples, nor with cutting and pasting the past into a new model for the future, Conte instead gathered a small army of Italian musicians to perform his creations. His sound nestles somewhere in between Italy's soundtracks of the 60's and 70's, funky Indian sitar takes, and the cool tones of Brazil's bossanova. The unlisted track, "Trappola Mortale" finishes the record off with an improvised jazz treat -- a song that could have been a leftover, warm-up outtake from the recording sessions. Nicola Conte's DJ skills add a flavor and texture to this album, peppering surprising breaks and twists into the stew of its live jazz feel.
