Milemarker
"Anaesthetic"
by: Sean Boy

Music is cyclical. What goes around comes around. Been there done that. Punk rock is a good case in point. It feels that way now. Ever since the mid-90’s there’s been glut of punk rock in all its varieties and it’s time to move on. So what happened after the initial Punk revolution? Bands like Joy Division, Gang of Four and The Fall came into prominence—carrying the punk rock attitude torch but branching out in terms of sound. History repeats itself, again, and Milemarker is a fine example among a growing number of Post-Punk: The Next Generation bands. Milemarker’s "Anaesthetic" stands out precisely because its sound rings true with the first round of post-punks. It’s dark, cinematic, sometimes snappy, sometimes shoegazey. “Ant Architect” reverberates with post-punk’s apocalyptic textures: voice-boxed vocals, and end-of-the-world lyrics: “We can bask in the glow in the new synthetic sun/The casket you know is the most comfortable one./We can suture the future/Shut like a cut/We can replicate structures which replicate us.” An eerie timeliness to their sound considering the recent attack on the country. And somehow when dark moods are soundtracked with dark music there often emerges a feeling of hope. So it is with Milemarker. Hope for the world, and hope for more music of their caliber.
