The Dining Rooms (the band name well is run dry indeed). What kind of name is that? It evokes Lounge, literally. So it’s a pleasantly surprising moment when the album, ‘Numero Deux’, opens with a straight-forward, downtempo hip-hop track. Song numero deux then busts wide open with a break straight outta Shadow’s skull, and everything’s really on the up and up. The Italian duo of Stefano Ghittoni and Cesare Malfatti spent time in Milan’s punk underground and resurfaced as a trip-hop force to be dealt with. And deal with this record you should. Lush female vocals, bluesy male vocals, classical, blues and jazz guitars all take turns as minor characters in this filmscape of an album. A smorgasbord of accents, French to Italian to the bubbly effervescence of Lounge, it’s all in there adhered with deft downtempo beats. Definitely a listen-oriented album. Perfect as an after-dinner chill record. And what a perfect name for the project: The Dining Rooms. Never judge a book by its cover.
