So what if Ozma hooked-up through a Weezer e-zine? So what if their early shows consisted primarily of Weezer covers? So what if they sound suspiciously similar to Weezer? And could they help that Weezer pulled off a miraculous comeback after a five hear hiatus? Nope. It could have been worse. Ozma could have picked another band to idolize. Nada Surf perhaps. So how does Ozma pull it off? How do they do it without sounding like hacks, like a bunch of Weezer-wanna-be’s. Rock and Roll Part Three works because Ozma is SO Weezer and their passion for this band runs so deep. But it’s not simply photocopying at work here. Ozma actually learned how to write songs from Weezer. That, and Ozma exudes a devotion for pure Rock ‘N’ Roll fun that Weezer themselves probably have a hard time mustering. Plus there’s no expectations, no rock ‘n’ roll baggage, no radio and MTV ubiquity, just a handful of suburban youth in their bedrooms earnestly writing songs after the manner of their not-so-ancient elders. Ozma is raw and urgent, something that Weezer, now, can never be.
