Beatless
"Life Mirrors"
by: Sean Boy

Beatless is anything but. Life Mirrors is a beat-full, soulful blend of styles from a handful of continents. Mining percussion and beats everywhere from Africa to Latin America, and similarly mining vocalists from London to California, Alex Attias and Paul Martin forge an album void of large instrumentation yet plump with soul…and ambition. Encompassing a variety of styles, including, techno, downtempo, hip-hop (with help from MC Quasimoto AKA Madlib), and full on New Orleans soul, with a cover of Allen Toussaint’s classic “Hercules,” Beatless gets jazzy all over the musical map—all roads paved with broken beats courtesy of Attias. It’s these beats which make up the heart, not only of each song, but also of the entire recording. Instead of packing the various genres in tight, including all the different parts of each, Beatless takes the dub route, pushing rhythm up-front and center. The sound is sparse, clean and leaves nothing between you and your groove.
