The Get Up Kids
"Eudora"
by: Sean Boy

This is not the new Get Up Kids album. Repeat: This is not the new Get Up Kids album. Eudora should whet the appetite, however, until sometime this spring, the expected release of their third full length. A collection of 7-inch singles, covers, and rarities dating back to their first recording, 1996's "Shorty," Eudora abridges the Get Up Kids' recent, but outstanding history. Check out the covers covered: The Replacements "Beer For Breakfast," The Pixies "Alec Eiffel," New Order's "Regret," and David Bowie's "Suffragette City." And don't forget Motley Crew's "On With the Show." Tight. This choice of songs proves two things: 1) The Get Up Kids like to rock and 2) they are exceptional songwriters. True, they didn't write those songs, but their choosing them exhibits deft awareness of the songwriting craft and reveals, not so subtly, their influences. The Get Up Kids' range is more monotone than the covers suggest, but on hearing how well their early song "Shorty" measures up to subsequent recordings, one is reminded the Get Up Kids proved their ability from the get go.
