Musical discoveries are one of life's simple beauties. Add Flanger to the recently discovered (for this reviewer at least). Flanger is a German duo, Burnt Friedman and Uwe Schmidt. Mr. Schmidt is the more prolific of the two artists and is credited with over 150 releases under various pseudonyms including Atom Heart and Seņor Coconut (where he first entered this reviewer's radar a couple years back). Discovering his works alone will take the average record buyer a dozen or so years. Flanger is a worthy beginning. Flangeršs bio states "their musical goal was to generate their own vision of non-repetitive, organic and extremely complex music that is far removed from the well-trodden paths of techno and other established styles of so-called contemporary music." In a word, jazz. Friedman and Schmidt programmed the beats, bass, percussion and all other manner of spaced-out fuzz and tones and tidbits, plugging in improvised performances by musicians from Chile and Denmark. 'Outer Space/Inner Space' serves as a departure from the not so status quo of Flangeršs status quo. The usual M.O. is to program it all. Išll be going back to their two previous works to see how well programmed improvisation sounds. Know this: the real improv is out of this world.
