Dr. Didg. Out of the woods.

There s no doubt that the mystical sounding instrument, the didgeridoo, is gaining in popularity. Some of KUCI s own deejays have, in fact, already tried to play the odd thing. The didgeridoo is a traditional instrument of the Australian Aborigine created from a thin trunk, hollowed out naturally by termites. It is played by blowing down on it like a trumpet, but you can mix your own voice into it as well. The sound created is an eerie bass which no other instrument can match. Dr. Didg (pronounced Doctor Didj) is the latest project from Graham Wiggins, and it captures the unique sound of the didgeridoo in a sense few others can master. Dr. Didg s latest CD, entitled Out of the Woods, is an energetic trip to the outback combined with western enthusiasm. Graham Wiggins supplies a completely new sound for the didgeridoo, accompanied by long-time drummer Ian Cambell, and new-comer, guitarist Mark Revell. Out of the Woods utilizes a combination of older ethnic sounds of the Aborigine and contemporary jazz/rock fusion. As Graham states, he doesn t want to reproduce Aboriginal music. He wishes, instead, to explore the unique rhythmic spaces opened by circular breathing and to extend the percussive range of the instrument. The final result is an exhilarating ride with Revell s lead guitar dancing over tribal drum sounds.
