What
began as just a way for me to deal with the boredom and loneliness
of UCI, became one of the longest programs broadcasted on KUCI. The
show started in January of 1998, my sophomore year at UCI. The show
bounced around several timeslots(Fri 3am-6am, Thurs 3am-6am, Mon 12am-3am,
Tues 12am-3am) and finally landed on Wednesdays 10pm-12am. This was
the first metal show on KUCI to be on before midnight in many years.
Most would assume that the name of the show came from the well-known
Sabbath tribute albums. But the name was taken from another Sabbath
related source. I had a trade magazine that detailed the history of
the godfathers of our beloved genre. In the article, it discussed
the confusion that some fans had about the meaning of the song title,
"NIB." Some thought that the song had stood for "Nativity
In Black." Geezer Butler cleared up the confusion by stating
that the song title didn't stand for anything and that it had been
called "NIB" after Bill Ward's beard which looked like a
pen-nib. Thus I thought that "Nativity in Black" was the
most suitable name for a metal show which owed it's existence to one
band that changed the world in 1970.
As
my musical knowledge grew, so did the show. The first shows were
characterized by mainly thrash and traditional/classic metal bands
with a small percentage of extreme metal. But as the years went
by, the show became more of an extreme metal show. But the point
of "Nativity in Black" has always been to play a variety
of different genres from different eras of metal. So I constantly
tried to play new and different genres that haven't been played
much before. More doses of doom, hardcore, atmospheric, avant-garde,
and dark metal were played during the last year of the show.
The
show was unfortunately brought to an abrupt halt in August of 2002.
Due to radio station politics, I decided to quit the show. I couldn't
continue in an atmosphere void of fairness and respect.
Big
hails go out to Roycifer, Big Johnson, Kevin Stockdale, Andrew Sample@Century
Media/Nuclear Blast, and Pellet@Relapse.
I
wanna thank all the people who have helped the show to live this
long and who have supported me to keep the fight...
