Ultrastor 34F weirdness

hi there... I bought a bunch o these things and...
in some cases, I find that when I enter the low level format
program, my single Quantum lightning 730 shows up at
all available SCSI ID'd and generally fails to work
properly... what causes this???? what motherboards
won't the U34F work with???
