Santa Monica Pier Twilight Concert Series
Alina Baraz / Mayer Hawthorne
by: DJ Foxy Lady

July 7th, 2016 was the official start of the Santa Monica Pier Twilight Concert Series with performances by Alina Baraz and Mayer Hawthorne that drew a crowd of 26,000 people! Concerts run from July 7 through September 8th from 7 to 10 p.m. every Thursday at the Santa Monica Pier. This was my first time attending the twilight concert series and I was pleasantly impressed, especially with the artists that are performing this summer. Being outdoors next to the beach and under the stars made the Santa Monica Pier a great venue for concerts.

The opening act was Alina Baraz who is a 21 year old R&B singer based out of Los Angeles, CA. The one word to describe her is “Beautiful”. She is so beautiful and so is her voice. Her stage presence was natural and stunning; she was always smiling and blushing, not pretentious at all.

Mayer Hawthorne was the headliner for the night and his voice blew me away. He reminded me of a modern day Frank Sinatra with the way he dressed and sang. I’m an old soul and I love soul music, so to hear that genre live for practically the first time in my life, was very special for me. I love that there is a resurgence of soul music and Neo soul in today’s industry. With pop, electronic and hip hop dominating the music scene, it’s nice to have alternative genres to dip into. If you haven’t heard of Mayer Hawthorne, I recommend the songs “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out” and “Her Favorite Song”.

Overall, it was a great night seeing these two performers I’m a fan of for the first time. They’re definitely on the rise and I can’t wait to see what they come out with next. If you’re interested in attending one of the Santa Monica Pier Concerts, they’re free and happening every Thursday. I’ll definitely be back for Rufus Du Sol on August 11th and Unknown Mortal Orchestra on September 1st.
