New in the KUCI Music Library / March 3, 2008

by: Sam Farzin, KUCI Music Director

This weekend I went to a fantastic restaurant in Laguna Niguel called Lulu's Cafe where I dined graciously on seafood and crepes. I would recommend it should you need to get ~*romantic*~. Here is new music.

Why? - Alopecia [Anticon]
Genrebending pop-hop, indietastic and wholly singular. Why?s up. If you don't know this band after this album, prepare for a lot of QUESTIONING.

Los Campesinos! - Hold On Now, Youngster... [Arts & Crafts]
This band loves exclamation marks almost as much as me! They are like the musical! equivalent of one! From England!

The Dodos - Visiter [Frenchkiss]
Formerly (betterly?) known as Dodo Bird, this band's last disc got a lot of spins here and now they're apparently hot stuff and on Frenchkiss. They are still rad though. And no, that's not a typo.

Elf Power - In A Cave [Rykodisc]
Psychoustic stompjams from these Athens, Ga. stalwarts.

These New Puritans - Beat Pyramid [Domino]
These kids are 19 and so much cooler than me, and they're English. This record is killer. Samplers, razorwire guitars, weird time signatures. Gang of Four, meet Forward, Russia! and the sound of a few youths who are ready to take over the world.

Team Robespierre - Everything's Perfect [Impose]
I saw this band play in an NYC warehouse, where the floor was unsubtly wavering under the apeshit moshpit. I could therefore not partake in good conscience with the knowledge that there was a concurrent performance taking place in the basement of the warehouse that could potentially come to a crushing end by the faulty floor/ceiling below/above. This is diy punktronica, 10 songs in 18 minutes.

State Bird - Mostly Ghostly [The Record Machine]
Bells and whistles kitchensink everything cute little instruments big noises animals everywhere swimming in rivers with everyone playing percussion music. Listen to track 2. Don't be afraid and play this oneeee.

White Hinderland - Phylactery Factory [Dead Oceans]
I was sold on this album within its first minute. I think that means track 1 rules, but the whole thing is solid.

Miwa Gemini - This Is How I Found You [Addictive]
Well-thought out old-time-y feeling pop songs. Describing this one is hard because it is just simply good! Stickers are saying this is sort of like Cat Power and Tom Waits and I think that is way apt.

A Weather - Cove [Team Love]
I guess because this is a girl and a boy and their music is sort of hushed it is RIYL Beach House but this is sort of more pop-jazzy where Beach House is much more of 60s relic undercurrent. Really good!!

okay that is all for this week. SPIN NEW DISCS !
